Well my good buddy and fellow Pro-Staff member Troy sent me some nice trail camera pictures of some big bucks in Georgia. I’m fired up and ready to go deer hunting.

Those are some really good trail camera pictures. It’s hard to believe it will be time to go deer hunting soon.

The other day I got a text message from a friend of mine Mike at work and it was some trail camera pictures of a really nice trophy whitetail that Mike had gotten on his farm in Iowa. This buck is a main frame ten pointer and Mike says he thinks he might be pushing 160. I’d say at least 160 maybe bigger, this is definitely a trophy whitetail.

Mike said he has some better shots he will e-mail me when he gets a chance and when he does I’ll put them on here. It’s always nice to see every-one’s shots from their properties especially of a monster  trophy whitetail as they are developing their antlers and on into the season.

It has been extremely hot and dry here in Kansas for the past couple of weeks and all the crops around my house were looking really dry. But yesterday evening we had some storms roll in and we got some much needed rain. The heat index has been up around 115 degrees, so tomorrows high of 89 degrees will be a beautiful thing. I’m ready for some cooler weather and ready get after those big bucks. Now is the time to plant those cool season food plots, and mow perennial food plots to control weeds as needed. I have hunted in Georgia most of my life and am not used to there being so much agriculture for them to eat.  I just can’t wait to see one of these big old mid-west monsters from the stand. I saw several shooters last year but it was while I was driving home from work at night during the rut. This year I hope to see one from the stand.

I got this trail camera picture of a very nice buck standing in the edge of a huge soybean field.

Today I went down to the soybean field and checked my trail camera. I had some really good shots of a couple of nice big bucks. I have the trail camera set up about ten yards from where Ill be deer hunting.

This buck is standing about 10 yards from where I'll be deer hunting in the edge of a soybean field.

There are several good trails leading to the soybean field from the hardwoods that come down to the field. I have already got a tree picked out to put my new ladder stand in. The big bucks are  really using the back corner of this field quite a bit. It will be time to go deer hunting before you know it, do you have your trail camera out yet?

It is almost time to plant those cool season food plots for your deer hunting property. Now is a great time to prepare the soil for your fall planting. And it’s a great time to mow perennial food plots to control weeds as needed.

It’s a great time to get those muzzle loaders and rifles sighted in and cleaned and ready for the season. Don’t wait until the last minute you will be glad you did it sooner than later. Also if you bow hunt it’s time to get that bow out and tuned up and ready to go. I have been shooting quite a bit and I can’t wait to get after those whitetails. From the looks of these pictures it could be a very interesting season.

This buck was hit by a car leaving the property I will be bow hunting this year.

Yesterday I got permission to hunt an awesome piece of property here in Kansas and I am super pumped and ready to go deer hunting. And what makes it even sweeter is it is in my backyard. I have the okay to hunt 80 acres with a 23 acre soybean field that butts up to a 400 acre soybean field and a huge corn field and the 23 acre soybean field has a funnel of hardwoods that comes down to it and I can hunt the hardwoods as well. Last week I spotted four big bucks feeding in the soybeans and even though I couldn’t see them real good because of the distance and it was getting dark, I could tell one of them was going to be a shooter for sure, he was nice. I got them on video but they were so far away the video footage is not real good. Last November my wife and my father-in-law saw a 200 class buck less than a mile from where I’ll be deer hunting, and my neighbor saw a huge big buck in the soybean field in the 23 acre field where I can hunt. Talk about pumped, I cant wait to go deer hunting. Heck I cant even think straight! Ive started a list of things I need to be ready by the start of the season. My list keeps getting longer but my birthday is next week and my beautiful wife said she might get me the stand I’ve been wanting. I put two trail cameras down there on the field already and plan on putting a couple of stands up real soon. I plan on shooting my bow this week also. I love this time of year even if it is hot as heck, deer season and college football are right around the corner. This just might be the year I get that Pope & Young buck I’ve been after. I have gotten my bow out and started practicing maybe this will be the year I finally get that Pope and Young buck. I noticed some of the corn has already been planted here in Kansas ans is already coming up. I am so pumped up about getting after these big bucks in Kansas this year. I have been seeing a lot of whitetails on my way to work in the morning. I have even seen a few big bucks that already are growing their antlers.

Food plots provide quality nutrition for whitetails.

I know it is still spring but with summer right around the corner the big bucks antlers can grow over an inch per day during their growing period which is about 150 days and can even grow a lot more than that during the peak of summer. So now is a great time to get those trail cameras out and get some great early pictures of those big bucks. I moved to Kansas last August and was able to do some deer hunting in Kansas last year but this year I plan on being ready. I am so pumped to be deer hunting in Kansas because I know it is a great state for big bucks. I believe one of the main reasons there are so many trophy whitetails in Kansas is the quality nutrition available for the deer. I have noticed the farmers are plowing the fields getting ready to plant the corn. The more quality nutrition available means more trophy whitetails. Some hunters think genetics make a bucks antlers bigger but good nutrition and letting them get older will make a huge  difference. The key to having a property that provides nutritional needs for your whitetail herd is diversity. Clear-cuts, old fields such as CRP, food plots, and mast such as acorns and apples and pears and persimmons during autumn and soft mass like blackberries  all provide different types of food sources that the deer need at different times of the year. The more diverse your property’s food sources are the more trophy whitetails it will attract.

Quality food means trophy whitetails.

Control burning let’s the native grasses grow better and also provide quality nutrition as well. So diversify your deer property by planting food plots that provide quality nutrition year round, control burn, properly manage old fields and watch those brutes get bigger each year. I dream about owning my own hunting land one day, I would love to be able to manage my own property. That is one really good thing about living in Kansas there is a whole lot of agriculture that provides the whitetails quality nutrition year round. Man I’m getting pumped just thinking about September!

Trail cameras are a great way to watch your big bucks develop and help you figure out the best way to harvest them when it is time to go deer hunting.

Spring has sprung and after about a 200 day gestation period the does should be giving birth about now. Some does from the age of  two and a half if they are healthy and the winter was not to harsh they may have twins. Most of the time one will be a doe and one will be a buck. The fawns will grow quickly during June and July. And as the days become longer the bucks will start growing their new antlers. So now is a great time to get those trail cameras out and watch those trophies develop their antlers all summer long up until bow season starts. It’s fun to see their development at the different stages of growth throughout the year. Have you seen any deer growing their antlers yet? Their antler growth will be slow at first during the spring but once the long days of summer roll around the antler growth will begin to be much more noticeable. So get those trail cameras out and watch those bucks develop throughout the summer months. Trail cameras are a great way to learn more valuable information that can help you get that once in a lifetime buck once deer season rolls around.

Planting food plots will improve deer hunting for big bucks.

There are some things you can do to improve your deer hunting on your property for those big bucks.  If you own or lease your property there are some things that you can do to improve your property quite a bit. Here is a list of things you can do to improve your deer hunting property for big bucks.

Supplemental feeding can improve your deer herd and help those big bucks grow bigger antlers.

1.Buck to doe ratio -Herd management. One to one buck to doe ratio is ideal. One to three is okay. Decrease your buck harvest and increase your doe harvest, depending on the ratio of your herd. Let your yearling bucks grow don’t shoot them. Let them grow to three and a half years old at least, with five and a half being better. Implement size restrictions on bucks. By setting a width and number of points restriction. Some clubs have restrictions of eight points or better or as wide as its ears.

2.Food Plots- If you ask me food plots is high on the list of things you can do to improve your hunting property for big bucks. Whitetails eat five to eight pounds of food every day for each one hundred pounds of body weight. Food plots give quality nutrition at the times of year when the whitetails need it the most. During the spring when the does are fawn bearing, during antler growth, and during the harsh cold months of winter when food is hard to find. Providing good food sources will definitely help the overall well being of your deer herd.

3.Control burn- Every year around February or March we do a control burn on our hunting property. We plow multiple fire breaks and clean the brush out from around all our deer stands, and we wait for the conditions to be right and then do the burn. We have to obtain a permit before we are able to burn. You always need to make sure you have the proper permits when burning. Every state may have different requirements so be sure to check with the proper authorities in the state where you are planning on burning.

4.Plant shrubs and trees- A few of the popular trees and shrubs are saw tooth oak, wild plum, crab apple, persimmon, honeysuckle, Hawthorne, dogwood, apple, pecan.

5.Supplemental feeding-High protein is good for antler growth. During the winter supplemental feeding can help deer survive the cold winter.Feeders are a great place to set up trail cameras. You can see whitetails up close and watch them grow.

You can improve your property by doing these five things.

My friend Patrick went shed hunting in Kansas a couple of weeks ago and found a nice set of sheds. It’s not to late to get out and find those big sheds. Also it’s time to put out lime and fertilizer and get those food plots ready to be planted. Get those soil samples and you will see a big difference in your deer hunting food plots.
