Frequently our taxidermy studio resembles an old time feed store, with friendly, excited people hanging around telling their hunting stories, photos and sharing bits of wisdom. Hunters are proud of their animals and love to show them off. Each animal coming in the door is a trophy to someone , be it the first spike shot by a young hunter, or a three inch trout caught by someone’s granddaughter.

Several times each hunting season an animal is brought in to the shop that stops everyone in their tracks. The hunter and staff members are pretty sure they have a “trophy book” animal and everyone gathers around to see and admire the beautiful animal that was harvested.

As a Master Measurer for Safari Club International, my husband Jerry is asked to score many such gorgeous animals. Saying you have an animal that made a trophy record book is a great reward, but is it necessary?

To some people, keeping track of scores is only a way for people to boast about their kill, adding proof that “mine is bigger than yours.” While crowing over a big kill can be a piece of the puzzle, there is much more involved in record keeping and to the clubs in charge of classifying the animals.

Trophy record books are used extensively for conservation purposes; a tool used by state and federal wildlife agencies alike. Herd size, condition, and range and habitat stability over several years can be tracked and managed with the aid of these records.

Finding out which book your animal qualities for can be more complicated and breaking down the different scoring methods, qualifications and philosophies gets really tricky

Safari Club International, Boone and Crockett, Pope and Young are some of the most recognized trophy record keeping clubs in the United States today. There are smaller organizations in most states with some of the different clubs such as fishing clubs and turkey clubs.

Safari Club International is an organization dedicated to the protection of hunters and hunting all over the world, their main focus is conservation, and protecting our hunting heritage through hunting legislation, and chapter involvement at the community level.

SCI hosts the most comprehensive record keeping system worldwide and recognizes all aspects of an animal stating that size matters as much as or perhaps more than perfection. SCI recognizes animals taken with a rifle, bow, handgun, or muzzleloader. There are categories for both free range and estate or high-fence harvested animals. SCI has two types of measurer; official scorer and master scorer.

Through SCI for most trophies, official scoring is all that is required. If an animal may potentially be a top ten contender, it has to go through a drying period and be rescored by a master measurer.

The Boone and Crockett Club was established in 1887 by Theodore Roosevelt along with several other influential men of his time and has a rich and fascinating history.

Through conservation efforts they saved Yellowstone Park and set fair chase guidelines that are still in practice today. President Roosevelt understood the need to conserve and manage our rapidly vanishing wildlife while at the same time preserving our right to hunt. The Boone and Crockett trophy record book is dedicated to firearm harvested North American game. The system places emphasis on the symmetry of a rack and penalizes portions of the rack that are non-symmetrical resulting in well-matched trophies placing higher than mismatched trophies of comparable size.

Pope and Young Club was founded in 1961 and named after pioneer bowhunters Dr. Saxton Pope and Arthur Young. Pope and Young with their scoring patterned after Boone and Crockett is dedicated specifically to the archery enthusiast.

Animals deemed trophy book animals are those that posses the minimum score to qualify for the particular record keeping organization. These minimum numbers are usually posted online at the official club’s website. A certified measurer for your club will also have this information. Getting an initial measurement on your own helps you know if you are close to the minimum requirements. Usually there are printable measuring instructions on the club websites.

Contact the organization you wish to be recorded with to have them give you the name of a measurer in your area.
Most often you will need to be a member of the organization in question in order to have your animal considered for a trophy record book. Membership may be included in your registration fee if you are not yet a member. Most of these organizations have implemented record keeping as a service to their patrons.

The hunter needs to take several good field pictures of the animal and rack from different angles when getting ready to have their animal considered.

Remember a trophy is in the eye of the beholder and all harvested animals are important. Just because it doesn’t “make book” doesn’t mean it is not something to be extremely proud of. A well worn book of snapshots depicting sensational hunting trips is every bit as important, if not more so than making a record book entry. Record books change every 3 years or so, but fond memories never do.

Each of the aforementioned organizations recognize that our best conservation efforts are in the lessons we teach to our children and grandchildren through positive hunting and conservation experiences.

The 2011 SHOT Show kicked off for me on Monday, January 17 on a very warm sunny day. Media Day at the Range is the event where writers, television producers, and so forth go to learn about all of the new guns being launched for the year. I have been to SHOT Show several times but have never attended this event in the past. I won’t miss it again! I landed at McCarran Airport at 8:30 a.m. dropped my bags at the lovely Paris Hotel and jumped on a shuttle bus to the range.

When I came over the hill to the Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club in Boulder City, I was excited about what I saw! Many of the major firearm makers in the world were represented and this is a huge range compared to what I am used to. I love to shoot and firing big guns is always a big treat for me.

I met up with Rick and Georgette Wood good friends, owners of GSS Competition and fellow gun enthusiasts. Georgette and I danced around in circles hugging while Rick let us get it out of our system. Then they showed me my taxi, a new XTO Electric Bad Boy Buggy! Sweet!

We shot up the hill to the Bad Boy Buggy booth where I learned a little about these nifty vehicles. They are super quiet and strong. I asked to drive the buggy and we went on a little trip with the representative… it was FUN! WAHOO! I went up a hill, over creek beds and in a few minutes I was thinking of how to snag one to take home.

Bad Boy Buggy, should be named Glad Girl Buggy!

Then we went to the Kriss/Sphinx booth up on the hill. I was so impressed with the pistols I saw there but got REALLY excited when I saw the KRISS Super V Vector CRB/SO .45 ACP. Now THIS was a fun looking weapon! Georgette and I spoke to the range officer and asked if we could shoot it. He showed us the fundamentals and let us take a practice shot, then two and then we got to open it up and let it go! Yeeee HAWWWW what fun! I could have stayed in that booth all day but there was a line, so we walked down to the lunch tent and had a nice meal.

Shooting the Kriss.45 acp.

Safari Club International Foundation had a raffle going for a KrissVector, CRB/SO .45 ACP Carbine that would benefit SCIF Mission programs. We all purchased tickets and continued on to another interesting spot at the range, Heckler & Koch. This was a great booth and we shot up quite a few rounds on their guns.

I was able to connect again with Vickie Gardner of Alpen Optics who is always a treat! Alpen has launched some really nice new rifle scopes and a compact spotting scope, I think I must have!

Alpen Optics compact scope!

As the day drew to a close, Georgette and I were visiting with Vickie and Georgette’s husband Rick went over to watch the raffle drawing. As we were chatting, Rick started waving to us and said that he won the gun. We were sure he was joking. He became very animated so we went over to where he was hopping around waving a piece of paper and he wasn’t joking! Rick really DID win the gun! WOW.

I was a tiny bit envious (and I wasn’t the only one) but so happy that Rick had won! At the booth we took some photos of Rick holding the gun and then he had to give it back so that it would be sent properly to him.

Rick Wood, a happy happy man!

The 2011 Media Day at the Range came to a close and we all boarded the shuttle buses back to the Vegas hotels. What a great day!

I have so much fun looking at the new products and of course right off the bat this morning I went to visit the Prois Booth and voila there it was! My Shot Show Quick Draw of the day! Actually I couldn’t choose so there are two for today!

Prois has been hard at work coming up with the VERY BEST women’s hunting apparel and now they are hitting the shooting industry with fabulous items as well!

My first pick for today is the Prois Competition Shooting Vest! It is incredibly well made, attractive and functional. The lower half zips off for those days when you only need an apron type for your shells.

Prois Competition Shooting Vest

Then next item is the brush pants. WOW! These are SO attractive and are so very well made! These pants are sure to make your upland hunting day a success!

Prois Brush Pants and Prois Shooting Vest!

I asked Angie some questions about winning this prestigious award and here is what she said…

Q. How did you feel when you were told you won?
A. On Jan 1st. all of my family and friends were watching the clock and the votes like a hawk. We were all so nervous that something would happen and one of the other contestants would all of a sudden get a spree of votes and I would lose in the final hours. Even when the website announced that the online voting had ended, I was still a ball of nerves until I finally got an Email from Tom Opre asking for my personal info to book a flight to the ATA show. That pretty much cemented to me that I had officially won and a whole new set of nerves took over….now it was nervous anticipation, excitement and also a sense of relief and accomplishment.

Q. What made you enter the contest?

A. My sister, Mickey Carr, and I have been hunting partners our entire life. We are very close in age and have shared almost every hunting experience together. One day she called me up and said that someone had told her about this contest called the “Extreme Huntress contest”. She told me that she thought I’d be perfect for it and should enter. My sister has good instincts both in the field and out so I took her advice and thank God I did.

Q. What is your favorite way to hunt?

A. Whatever type is successful! hahaha…. honestly I love to hunt. I’d hunt anything and everything I could if given the chance. My most favorite type of hunting here in Montana has to be archery hunting for Bull elk. There is nothing more exciting than hearing the scream of a bull in the distance and then working the wind and terraine in an attempt to make a sneak on him. Talk about an aderinline rush. I also get that same rush during the white tail rut trying to rattle in a big buck. I can rattle for hours. I’m just certain that the buck is going to come in if I just give him five more minutes….

Q. Where is your favorite place to hunt?

A. Maybe I should give you the old stand by quote of ” my favorite place to hunt is in the woods!” HAHA
I love Montana and have basically done the majority of my hunting in my great home state. So, Montana takes the cake for me. Although each hunting experience offers something new and unforgettable. I was able to join my husband on a Grizzly bear hunt in Northern B.C. He won the hunt through a raffle for the wild sheep foundation, and that was an amazing experience I’ll never forget. While I went to school and worked in Minnesota I spent some time hunting pheasants, ducks, geese and whitetails in the farmlands of western Minnesota. It was a totally different type of hunt then hunting in the mountains and thick forests and it gave me a new appreciation and awareness of the migrations of the waterfowl and the ability of a deer to totally disappear into the smallest patch of tall grass or brush in an area where you’d swear no animal could hide. I dream of someday being able to hunt the world. When I think of future vacations I’d like to take they always revolve around what type of animal I’d like to hunt and what amazing new adventure that it could take me on.

Q. Tell me a bit about your family and your work?

A. I am married to my wonderful and competitive hunting husband Travis Tennison and we have 2 beautiful children, our daughter Quin is 4.5 and our son Trent is 1.5. We live just outside of Kalispell Montana up in NorthWestern Montana in Glacier park country. We spend every minute that we can in the outdoors and we joke that we only work to afford to Hunt. Our children could both say Buck and Elk before they could even say Mom or Dad. My Daughter and Son can both cow call and bugle. My daughter keeps asking when its going to be HER turn to shoot the buck. As for my work, I am a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist ( MRI tech) at Health Center Northwest in Kalispell. Which means that I am the person who puts you in the noisy tube and takes pictures of your insides. I went to school at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis MN. After school I worked in BonnersFerry, Idaho as a mammagraphy/ xray tech, and worked for several years for a Mobile Imaging company based out of Madison, WI where I managed 7 mobile MRI scanners in 3 different states including WI, Iowa, and MN. I have been very fortunate in my work life and have been able to work with and for some very wonderful individuals and they’ve all been very understanding and tolerant of my hunting addiction.

Q. What do you feel is the most important thing to pass on to the next generation about their hunting heritage?

A. Respect the animals, respect the land, don’t take more than your share, and always give back. I plan on hunting with my children for as many seasons as God grants me and when its my time to go I want to make sure that my kids have learned from me that in the end Hunting isn’t about killing. Infact, sometimes the most memorable day you’ll have is one when you come home empty handed but with a great animal encounter, an accomplished hike, a thrilling experience, or just a day full of laughter.

Q. What are you most excited to have happen with your win?

A. I am excited about the possibilities. I am thrilled about the gear that all the wonderful sponcers will be outfitting me with. Any hunter loves good quality gear. I can’t wait to meet all the new people I will be introduced to over the next several month and hear all their great hunting stories and share a few of my own. And of course I can’t wait to go to New Zealand. I want to hear a Red Stag Roar.

Congratulations to Angie Haas Tennison 2011 Extreme Huntress!!

NEWTOWN, Conn.?The National Shooting Sports Foundation has announced that Doug Painter, former president and chief executive officer and NSSF’s longest-serving employee, will retire on March 31, 2011. NSSF is the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry.

Currently senior advisor and trade liaison, Painter has enjoyed a distinguished career at NSSF covering 37 of the organization’s 50 years. Appropriately, one of his most recent tasks was to author “The National Shooting Sports Foundation: A History 1961-2011,” a publication marking NSSF’s golden anniversary and a chronicle of the organization’s achievements, many of which Painter witnessed first-hand.

“It’s been a great privilege,” said Painter, “to play a role in helping to sustain and strengthen America’s sporting traditions over the past four decades. Much has changed over the years, but the importance of investing in the future of our outdoor heritage has not. I look forward to continuing to remain active in such efforts.”

NSSF will recognize Painter for his many contributions to NSSF and industry at the State of the Industry Dinner at the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show in Las Vegas in January.

“I’ve had the privilege of knowing Doug and working with him for 31 event-filled years, and throughout some pretty trying times he has remained a stalwart source of good humor, sound advice and creative advocacy for our cause,” said Steve Sanetti, NSSF president and CEO. “He leaves some pretty big shoes to fill at the NSSF, but I’m confident that those who remain will have profited greatly from Doug’s imparted wisdom and will continue to fulfill his vision for the NSSF as the premier industry trade association. That magnificent voice will echo around here for a very long time!”

During a wide-ranging career, Painter served NSSF as media relations specialist, director of communications, vice president of marketing administration and executive director prior to being named president and CEO by the NSSF Board of Governors in 2002. He also served as president of the Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Fund and the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute.

In the 1970s and ’80s, Painter was the point person for NSSF’s efforts to bring increased visibility to the shooting sports via television. He has fond memories of working with TV personalities and fellow shooting and hunting enthusiasts Grits Gresham, Roy Rogers and Curt Gowdy, among others. Painter honed his own on-camera skills to eventually become the recognized face of NSSF in many of the organization’s television and online video productions, as well as serving as host on a broad range of outdoor television productions.

Before arriving at NSSF in 1973, Painter was assistant headmaster at the Maret School in Washington, D.C. In a sense, he was an educator at heart throughout his career at NSSF, helping to promote hunter safety education and authoring many of the Foundation’s publications and public service programs in the areas of wildlife conservation and hunter ethics. Later in his career, he was the impetus behind one of NSSF’s most successful education programs ever, Project ChildSafe, the nationwide firearm safety education effort that has distributed some 35 million gun lock safety kits and was adopted by President George W. Bush as his administration’s key firearm safety initiative.

Known as an outstanding public speaker and storyteller, Painter has given speeches to major sportsman and conservation groups throughout the country. He was active on the boards of directors of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Wildlife Management Institute, Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Trust and Youth Shooting Sports Alliance, and currently is co-chair of the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies Steering Committee.

A lifelong sportsman, Painter has traveled from the tropics to the tundra to pursue his outdoor passions, which range from hunting big-game in Alaska to waterfowl on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, to shooting clay targets with friends and colleagues, to traveling wherever game fish beckon him to cast a fly.

Painter plans to stay involved in efforts to promote the sporting activities that have meant so much to him while also spending more time with his wife, Susan, and their sons, family and grandchildren in one of their favorite places, Nantucket Island.

Christmas Gifts for the Sportswoman in your life!

1. ANYTHING from Prois Hunting Apparel! This company has FAR surpassed the competition in comfort, wearability, and practicality for the huntress. I have never worn a better hunting apparel product and I now exclusively wear Prois when I am in the field. My favorite pieces this year are the Sherpa Reversible Vest the Prois Pro-Edition Jacket and the Prois Ultra Fitted Pants. Each piece comes in the most popular Realtree patterns and are made in the USA. Have your huntress be warm, comfortable and of course look great in the field!

Prois Pro-Edition Jacket

2. Alpen Optics Binoculars. I love Alpen Optics Pink Binos because I can find them easily, my men don’t grab them quite so often, and Alpen Optics makes an annual donation to breast cancer research with their sales of pink binoculars. I have put these binoculars up against more expensive pairs and have found them crystal clear and very comparable. I really enjoy using them and find they fit my face easily and comfortably, which is something I usually have a hard time with. A great company and great gear. Check out the Alpen Pink 263P 8×25 compact and the Alpen Pink 393P 10×42 full-size binoculars.

Alpen Optics Pink Binoculars

3. Darton Archery DS-3800SD Compound bow. This year finally shot my first buck with a bow and my Darton DS-3800SD bow was the bow I used. What a GREAT bow! The power and speed rivals that of a larger bow but with a shorter draw length for my shorter arms. During practice, I shot against the fellas at my range and all of them were very impressed! I carried it up into a tree stand and also to church…refer to http://skinnymoose.com/annevinnola/2010/10/22/mama-shoots-a-big-buck-at-church/ for that story! The DS-3800SD is the perfect bow for your lady!

Darton Bow-Victory Archery Arrow

4. With my Darton bow, I used Victory Archery‘s V-force 400 arrows I was confident in each shot I practiced with and then again when I shot my deer. They are attractive arrows but much more importantly, they are deadly. Every shot should start and end with Victory!

5. My all time favorite hunting boots are my Pronghorn GTX boots by Danner Boots. One of the criteria I measure boots with when working on my reviews is that they are comfortable straight from the box and the Pronghorn GTX boots are like slipping comfy slippers on to traipse around the mountains! I wear them hiking in the summer as well as in the fall during pronghorn, deer elk and while upland bird hunting. I never have a problem with cold feet or blisters even on really cold mornings. THESE are the boots to get your gal!

Danner Pronghorn GTX

6. Camp Chef …WOW! There is no product in their lineup that I have not really enjoyed using! My favorite products so far are the dutch ovens. I have used both the Standard 10″ and the Standard 14″ models and these by far out work any dutch ovens I have ever used! Camp Chef has so many clever products for the sportswoman that there are too many to name in this space. check out Camp Chef for yourself you will NOT be disappointed!

Camp Chef- Awesome Dutch Ovens!

7. I found this book earlier this year and love it!! Gut It Cut iIt Cook It -The Deer Hunters Guide to Processing and Preparing Venison by Eric Fromm and Al Cambronne. Excellent full color detailed photos and well done text walks the hunter through the entire process of taking care of your venison (and any game meat) from kill all the way to the table. This book features very detailed descriptions of every thing you need to know from shot placement, to field care to finally taking care of your trophy antlers and cape. Grab this book and you will learn a lit whether you have been hunting for many years or just a few seasons! Published by Krause Publications found on Amazon.com and at GutItCutItCookIt.com

Gut It,Cut It, Cook It, By Eric Fromm and Al Cambronne

8. SigSauer P-238. I am a big proponent of women learning to protect themselves and one of the pistols I enjoy shooting and carrying is my P-238. It is lightweight, easy to handle and packs quite a punch. Sig Sauer has a solid reputation for awesome products and I recommend many of their guns. I like that this pistol fits in my waistband holster for easy concealment. It fires smoothly and has all of the features I consider important for personal safety.

SigSauer P238 Excellent Concealed carry weapon!

9. Taser C2 If you prefer a non-lethal alternative to carry, I recommend my TaserC2. It features replaceable cartridges, a 30 second cycle to allow you to escape dangerous situations and training DVD to help you read and react to potentially dangerous situations. Ladies, you must get serious about protecting yourself and your loved ones! This can’t be stressed enough!

Taser C2 Non Lethal Protection

10. Mary Kay Cosmetics Why be ugly in the field or let your skin suffer from the elements? I know this may seem really funny, but as a Mary Kay Consultant for many years I saw the difference in great skin care and poor and believe it is vital to take care of your skin in the outdoors. The Mary Kay Timewise line is amazing and formulated to protect and hydrate your skin and protect it from the elements and the Day and Night Solutions help protect and repair your skin. They have some awesome Facial Cleansing Cloths where all you need to do is add water and you have a soft cloth with cleanser already on it. I see no reason not to look and feel your best while hunting or representing the outdoor industry! Look for a Mary Kay consultant near you!

This rounds out my 2010 Christmas list for the amazing products I love for your favorite sportswoman!

What a blast! Ok, pun intended!

I went pheasant hunting last Sunday afternoon with my husband, daughter Jenny, our manager Buddy and my daughter’s boyfriend Steven. Since we don’t live in a real terriffic area for pheasants, we drove about 2 hours to Rocky Mountain Roosters located just outside of Calhan, CO for the afternoon.

We arrived at the lodge and kicked around waiting for our friends and guides Kyle and Melanie Schomaker. We noticed when we parked a nifty wagon loaded with hundreds of colorful shotgun shell hulls and my first impression of the outside of the complex was, Yippee I am in Pheasant country!

I have hunted in several excellent lodges in this country and initially Rocky Mountain Roosters rated high in my book. I love LOVE pheasant hunting and am always on the look out for great places to go. I have a fairly simple criteria… many pheasants, great dogs, and comfortable setting. Rocky Mountain Roosters seems to have it all!

We met up with Kyle and Melanie and their very capable assistants, Tyler and Courtney who are also their kids. These teens certainly know their way around the pheasant field and are great assistance to their folks!

We gathered everyone up making sure everyone had enough shells and warm clothes. Kyle let the first set of dogs out. He has some great German Short-hair dogs! My favorite was Jasmine, or Jazzy for short. She was a special soul that loved her work. Hanna was sweet also as was Bear. Very dedicated well trained pointers all.

We took off and weren’t even out of eyesight from the vehicles and the dogs hit point. The sky lit up! At least 6 birds got up from several little clumps of bushes.

Jenny and I hit our first birds and several more came down. I was excited that Jenny was having success since she hasn’t hunted pheasants much. She was loving it! I hit a nice rooster and the guys brought 2 or 3 down that time also.

We gathered everyone up and took off down the hill again. Jazzy stopped and pointed to a bush and Steven walked up to it where a couple more birds jumped up. This was the routine for the day.

We spent several hours in the field and everyone came home with their limit. The weather was perfect and the day was simply awesome.

The time outside with my family was precious and there was enough excitement to keep everyone interested and the kids all had a great time together… even the adult ones!

Thanks you goes out to the Schomaker family for being wonderful guides.

When we finally got home the guys cleaned the birds and I stewed them for Gumbo.

The recipe is easy and very yummy!

Anne’s Pheasant Gumbo

I cook soups and stews in general measurements so you can eyeball these…

2 lbs cooked pheasant meat, deboned

1 lb Polish Sausage (I like Hillshire Farms)

1 small onion

1 small bag of mixed veggies

1 small bag of chopped okra

2 tbs butter

2-3 tbs flour

1 box of chicken stock or 3 cups of water and a little chicken bouillon.

Tony Chachere’s Cajun Seasoning

Cut the sausage into small bite sized pieces and brown them with the chopped onion. Add the butter and let it melt. When the butter melts, add the flour and stir to coat the meat. Next add the pheasant meat and the rest of the ingredients. Be careful with the Tony Chachere’s seasoning as it is spicy and salty. I usually add a tablespoon or so to the gumbo and then put it on the table in case people want more. Simmer until thick , usually 1-2 hours. I also put it all in the crock pot frequently.

Serve over cooked rice.
