Got Stink?

Every time I enter my barn I’m reminded of a nasty job I have ahead of me: boiling skulls. After hunting season I kick up my feet and take it easy. If you believe that I have a tropical beach location for sale in northern Wyoming I’d like to show you. I do however; shirk my responsibilities on boiling the skulls from the previous hunting season and preparing them for European mounts.

The stink is telling me it’s high time to begin the smelly chore and here’s my recipe to get the job done minus the expensive cost.

Wisconsin Wolves Killing More Hunting Dogs

A report issued this week by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources indicates gray wolves are becoming increasingly troublesome for farmers and hunting dog owners across the state, killing a record number of animals in 2010.

Wolves attacked or killed livestock on a total of 47 Wisconsin farms last year, up from 28 farms in 2009 and from the previous high of 32 farms in 2008. Douglas County led the list with 12 livestock attacks. Sixteen other northern counties also reported problems with wolves.

Right to Hunt Bill

Let’s face it; hunting has been around since the beginning of mankind and that wild primal urge is still alive and well within all of us today. At least for the time being! It’s important to remember that throughout our history, hunters have helped shape and mold the true American spirit. In fact, one can even argue that hunters have played a monumental role in carving out a new nation from a harsh wilderness environment and the tyrannical rule of an English King. The woodsmanship skills of hunters have been clearly evident throughout every American challenge, struggle, conflict, and war in our history.

Persistence + Patience = 4 Drop Tines

A few years ago, Frank Brown encountered a very special buck that made it very difficult for the hunter to even look at another whitetail. In fact, it only took him one quick glance to decide that this was definitely the deer he wanted to tag. His decision to hold out for one whitetail ultimately led to several seasons with no bucks in the freezer or on the wall. However, Brown was confident that all of his persistence and patience would eventually produce at least one shot opportunity with this remarkable buck.

Apocalypse Now?

It’s starting to look like this mass death of critters is not exclusive to Arkansas. We’ve been seeing it in the Northeast as well as in Lousiana. Luckily, someone with a lot of time on their hands has created a google map with links to many similar stories. Check it out below!

Gayne Has Putin on His List

Back in December I wrote “start hanging out with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin” on my list of New Year’s Resolutions. I did so because he has a fondness for beer, enjoys watching fights, and gets to hunt endangered species with a tranquilizer gun. I’m sure him engaging in the latter has to do with his political clout and not with the fact that he’s so cool he responds to wimpy reporters that ask about his outdoor endeavors by saying, “Living in general is dangerous.” You tell ‘em Putin.  If he gives you anymore lip ship him to a gulag!

OL Weather: A Weather Report for Outdoorsmen

When I first began developing the idea for a weather site, I asked myself: “What kind of weather information is absolutely essential for sportsmen?”

All of us look forward to those magical days when the woods come alive with bucks chasing does or turkeys gobbling from their roosts, or those amazing times when, no matter what you throw, every cast draws a strike. The only problem: No one could predict when those magical hunting and fishing days would occur…until now.
