Temperatures finally out of the high 90s. White-tailed deer archery season just a couple weeks away in many eastern states. NFL season ready to kick off (have my second fantasy draft tonight…:)) Oh, and yea, web traffic is starting to pick back up on the blog. I must thank all of you for the second best month in the 3 year history of The Outdoor Smorgasbord. That is really saying something considering it is not even hunting season yet. Keep in mind deer season is still a month and a half away here in Alabama, but I’ve got another hog hunt to bring to you as well as the product reviews I talked about yesterday. Another 11 bucks need to take drug-induced naps so I can strap GPS collars on them, and I’ll be spending a week in Kansas with the smokepole at the end of September. Enough reasons to start excited, I should say so. Keep checking back in and I’ll keep cranking out posts.

A duo of hikers came upon a well-preserved body while walking near Edmonton, Canada. A melting glacier had given up the body, and it’s been ID’d as an American climber who’s been missing for 21 years.

Parks Canada rescue specialist Garth Lemke told The Canadian Press news service that the glacier ice that covered the body had melted, leaving an eerie scene.

“By the time we got there the body was fully exposed. We didn’t have to chip the body out at all,” Lemke told the news service.

The man is William Holland, who disappeared in the icefields while hiking a treacherous route in April 1989.

In this series of blogs I share the day-by-day journal from my archery safari experience with Dries Visser Safaris in the Republic of South Africa. The entries will likely contain more detail than some desire, but in keeping with dv’s Mostly Archery mission, I want to help you be more successful and I think the extra details will.

August 13th, 2010 – Travel Day 1

Note: There won’t be lot of pictures during the travel days entries. Please bear with me, they are coming.

I checked in with United Express in Milwaukee. I was planning to be quite solemn when it came to my bow case. It was larger than the 62 allowable inches (length plus thickness plus width), but to me this is a scam. I could find no airline approved compound bow case on the market that fit in this allowance. The counter attendant never said a word. She tried to get me to take an earlier flight to Chicago O’Hare which I refused. Conceptually, I wanted my luggage and I to be on the same plane. I am glad that I refused as its doors closed before I got through security. My flight was overbooked, but I made it safely onboard.

The SKB double parallel limb bowcase.

Upon arrival to Chicage O’Hare I navigated my way to the Dulles departure gate. Boarding this flight went well also. Once at Dulles I found the international departure gate for the seventeen hour South African Airway’s flight and settled in for the seven hour departure wait, perused the gift shops and scouted out dinner. I read and listened to the radio via my I-pod while making sure it was charged for the long flight.

At some point the counter called for us to change out our originally issued boarding passes for new purple ones. I did it quickly, but despite many calls others did not. Upon boarding these passengers had to go stand in line again to get a purple boarding pass.

Turns out I was seated next to Tim from Oregon who was also a bowhunter. We passed the time off and on by sharing stories. I had an outside aisle row seat and it turns out passengers can’t store stuff under the seat in front of them in this particular seat. That was an inconvenience since my pack was loaded with things like water, No Jet Lag pills, two I-pods, books and magazines. It ended up working out to store it in the overhead, but it was, again, slightly inconvenient. Doug at Gracy Travel had helped me choose the aisle seat since I get up to the call of nature a lot and, due to a left calf blood clot from 2007, I wanted to move around occasionally.

The meals and beverages were decent, filling and frequent. The personal entertainment system, consisting of a TV mounted in the back of the seat in front of each passenger, had plenty of good movies, music, TV shows, games, flight map and silly exercises to choose from. I read and never even got my I-pod out. Every two hours I took my No Jet Lag pill and walked to the back of the plane. The stewards and stewardesses were very accommodating. Having suffered a blood clot in my left calf in 2007 I had been advised by the Hunt Doctors to wear compression socks (I simply used some extremely tight-fitting soccer socks that also double for winter running) and ensure I got up and moved occasionally. I performed a series of upper and lower body stretches as well as some toe raises to get the blood pumping each time.

Each time Tim would get up and return he brought something back with him; juice, chocolates, sunflower seeds (which actually turned out to be instant coffee). That helped pass the time. The one-hour fuel stop in Dakar was uneventful. The associated fumigation was also not that bad.

happy hunting, dv

River kayak racing is a lot tougher than it might seem. Brad Pennington was 35 miles into a 340-boat race up the Missouri River when he said he thought someone hit him in the head with a brick. It turned out to be a 30-pound, sideways-leaping silver carp that jumped out of the water at him. He managed to keep his boat upright and continue paddling, but he had to withdraw from the race with a broken rudder. Oddly enough, Pennington said that getting face slapped by a carp wasn’t even the worst thing that’s happened to him during a kayak race. “In Texas,” he said. “We’ve been shot at with BB guns during races.”

“Fancy rafting across the Atlantic? Famous traveller requires 3 crew. Must be OAP. Serious adventurers only.”

I have to say, I thought he was kind of an idiot until I read that ad. Now I’m cheering for him until they make landfall wherever the heck the wind blows their plastic contraption.

We managed to dart bucks #2 and #3 for our GPS collar study here in Alabama. The first was this yearling 5 point.

He showed signs of being a chronic EHD survivor with his sloughing hooves.

The second buck was also a yearling but certainly has a big jump on most other individuals in his age class related to antler growth. For a 1.5 year old buck in the Southeast, he sure does show good promise. I had to take a hard look at the teeth to convince myself he was definitely a yearling buck, but the tricuspid molar doesn’t lie.

I’ve plugged Bill Winke’s MidWest Whitetail website before, but I’ll do it again because they are kicking off their introductory shows for the fall this week. There are 10 different shows that will be producing weekly (sometimes 2 a week during the rut) episodes. Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, the Northeast, Indiana, the Great Plains, and Wisconsin. In addition to these, Bill Winke’s feature show out of Iowa will be broadcast.

If you didn’t tune in last year, you don’t know what you are missing. Personally I think the video that is laid down by the individual states’ pro staff members is better than 90% of what you can watch on outdoor television networks. Plus it adds extra excitement knowing that the hunts took place only days and sometimes hours ago, not in 2009 or the year before that. So do yourself a favor, bookmark the website, and watch MidWest Whitetail this fall.

Another website worth checking out is Grant Woods’ Growing Deer TV. There are about 40 informative videos archived about everything from food plots and helping deer through drought to mineral licks and applying prescribed fire to deer habitat. It is structured similarly to Bill Winke’s website as weekly episodes apply to current issues facing deer management on his properties and hunting encounters that take place that very week. If you are a hunting property owner, this website will definitely provide you with some valuable insights on how to better manage your land for wildlife.
