For as long as I can remember in Westchester County (WMU 3S) hunters have been able to buy a super sportsman license which includes a Regular Season Deer tag (antlered deer only – buck #1), Bow/Muzzleloader Either Sex tag (buck #2), Bow/Muzzleloader Antlerless tag, and two DMP tags for 3S.
Once you fill your DMP tags, you can bring the head into the DEC for a replacement Bonus DMP tag which in previous years was a Either Sex Bonus DMP tag (buck #3 and buck #4). Once you shot a buck you with your Bonus DMP tag you couldn’t turn it in again for another Either Sex Bonus DMP.
With four buck tags in your pocket there was no reason to be selective and hunters were shooting an ‘icebreaker’ buck or two to start the season off and then waiting for a bigger deer later in the season. This is one of the reasons why so many yearling bucks are shot in Westchester County and not a lot of bucks get to reach age 4 1/2.
There’s been quite a bit of discussion about the topic on our Facebook page today. What are your thoughts on the new rule? Is it for the better or worse?
