It Could Get Dangerous When Deer Fight

I can’t seem to find much information on these photos. They were sent to me by a reader. When everything is put in perspective, even though the focus is on the horn lodged in the buck’s right eye, that’s a pretty good sized deer.

Hunts #34-38 – 12/16 Doe

I hunted 5 mornings or evenings last week.  Carried the bow 4 times and took my Grandpa’s old .30-06 Thursday evening before the big rain front moved through.

The green plots looked really good but all I saw was 2 does and a fawn slipping through over one hundred yards behind the stand.  I wasn’t going [...]

My brother is rubbing it in…

So a couple years ago, I was on the fence about heading back to NC for the archery opener. My little brother tossed the last straw on the load with a game cam photo of a really nice buck.
Well, there are only about two weeks left in the season this year, and no way I’ll [...]

New Illinois Record Bow Buck?

Last week, Field Notes guru Dave Hurteau did a great profile (and an exclusive, I might add) on what will likely be the Ohio state record muzzleloader buck. And just recently, another buck profiled…

Big Whitetail Bucks Hit By Cars Every Year And My Last Chance Deer Hunting This Season

Yesterday afternoon I was able to go deer hunting. I had one blowing at me and then I saw 4 does and then a small 6-point chasing them, but no big bucks. I have had a tough year of deer hunting so far and it is just about over for me. We are going back [...]

Trapped On Ice, Coyotes Have Advantage

This is not necessarily the taking of the weak and sickly of the Maine deer herd by coyotes.
Reader Al forwarded these photos he received from a friend and fellow hunter. The photos were accompanied by a short caption.

Hunt #33 – 12/10/09 P.M.

Wednesday, I was down at my high-fenced research site doing radio telemetry on my collared bucks when a certain spot caught my eye.  There were acorns everywhere still and the deer sign indicated they were being heavily used.  Trying to capitalize on a smoking hot spot, I immediately hung a stand and planned to hunt [...]

Field & Stream’s Petzal Bags Kansas Buck Didn’t See Any Deer In Maine

While congratulations are in order for Dave Petzal in bagging a beauty of a buck in the cold and snow in Kansas, unfortunately he does nothing to help Maine’s cause for those hoping to make a few bucks (sorry) from drawing outsiders to the state for trophy whitetail.
Please don’t take me wrong, Petzal did nothing [...]

Maine’s Deer Herd May Be In Worse Shape Than Feared

The only way that we can tell about what’s really going on with the Maine deer herd is reports from hunters in the field and a look at deer harvest numbers. Then we can guess. We don’t have official deer harvest numbers yet but when we do, I think we may be shocked when we [...]

Shotgun choke choices for preadator hunting

Along with shot size, choke restriction is a controversial subject when it comes to predator hunting. Some will tell you X-full others will tell you modified, but people with experience will tell you to pattern your gun until you find what you are looking for. There are a few variables in choke selection such as, [...]

St. Martin Island Deer Harvest

From what I can gather, these deer were taken on St. Martin’s Island off the coast of the Upper Peninsular of Michigan. All the deer were taken legally, however 10 hunters were ticketed because they had failed to attach their tags. This occurred in a raid by game wardens.
I don’t have much other information except [...]

Deer keep falling…

One of Colter’s buddies, Jeff, killed this deer during the first week of January.  I believe it was his best deer to date.  Beautiful 8 pointer with a 17.5″ inside spread.

Conner (left), Colter’s brother, connected on this awesome 9 pointer the same weekend just across the property line on another lease tract.  He had seen [...]

Maine Hunters Are Mad And Justly So……..For Many Reasons

Better communication can resolve a lot of problems in our world. In the converse, lack of such can cause things to spin drastically out of control. Maine hunters, particularly deer hunters, are quite angry and I believe they are justified in at least some of their anger. All they are getting are excuses.
It is no [...]

Buddy’s GA Success

Colter, a familiar face here at The Outdoor Smorgasbord, had some success over the Thanksgiving holiday.  He spent a full week at his family’s lease properties in Georgia chasing deer (and incidentally pigs) during the rut.

A couple more NC rifle bucks

Dad’s hunting buddy Todd connected on his 2 best bucks of his hunting career.
First, on the evening after dad shot his great 8 pointer off the ground, dad returned the favor by helping him drag out this tall-tined 10 point.  Rough scored right at 130.

Good thing about central NC is you have 2 buck tags.

Dad’s NC Rifle Buck
