Minnesota Moose Decline: I Voted For It Before I Voted Against It

Readers need to take a look at the excellent read at Western Institute for Study of the Environment. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has released a Moose Advisory Committee report that tells of the continued rapid decline of the state’s moose population…..with not one mention of predators contributing to the cause. This report is [...]

Got Stink?

Every time I enter my barn I’m reminded of a nasty job I have ahead of me: boiling skulls. After hunting season I kick up my feet and take it easy. If you believe that I have a tropical beach location for sale in northern Wyoming I’d like to show you. I do however; shirk my responsibilities on boiling the skulls from the previous hunting season and preparing them for European mounts.

The stink is telling me it’s high time to begin the smelly chore and here’s my recipe to get the job done minus the expensive cost.

Firearm Season: Breaking Tradition?

As a person who has lived and hunted in Michigan my whole life, I’ve always been pretty fond of November 15th; it has been the date of Michigan’s firearm opener for a long, long, long time.  Back in the hunting heydays of the 60′s and 70′s, and still to this day in some rural Michigan [...]

Are Your Deer Dying?

Winter can take its toll on wildlife and this year has been especially hard on some species, and we’re coming into the most critical time period with as much as 30 days remaining in some areas before melt off.  I did some regional checkups on numerous states WSI(Winter Severity Index) and here are the results:

Being Eaten Alive by Coyotes/Wolves – Part II

Two weeks ago, a reader provided photos that showed the bloody progression of how a deer in Maine was tracked down, attacked and eaten alive by coyotes or coyote-wolf hybrids. Dave Tobey of Eastern Maine provides more photos of another victim. This time a doe deer pregnant with twin female fawns. The attack begins. Appears [...]

Long Range Shooting… Again?

Color me aggravated. Got home from work and found my new issue of Outdoor Life.  “Cool,” thinks I!  “There’s usually something good in there.” But then, right there on the front cover, it was staring out at me… “Outdoor Life’s Advanced Guide To Precision Long-Range Shooting”. “Wonderful,” I’m thinking.  “Another paean to shooting big game [...]

Avoidable Hunting Accidents

We’ve all been there and done it, a post hunting ride gone terribly wrong!  These mishaps are avoidable if we just take a little time to play it safe.  A friend of mine from England – Matt Goodlife, shows us an example of what can go wrong from something so innocent as a ride back from [...]

Are You A Nose Jammer?

by Dave Hurteau

It’s not as personal a question as it sounds. And I really should phrase it: Will you be a nose jammer this fall? What is a nose jammer? I admit I just sort of made that up, figuring that someone who uses Nose Jammer to jam noses can himself be called a nose jammer.

Wild Game Dinner: A Hunting Celebration

It was casually mentioned to me by Jeff.  Did I want to go to a local wild game dinner that his neighbor invited us to?  It was to be held in a local Baptist church, and it included a few perks:  (1) If we donated a few Cottage Craft Works Custom Calls to their prize [...]

Gov. Schweitzer Runs From His Own Shadow

So far it appears Wyoming, the black sheep of the Northern Rocky Mountain states that had wolves dumped in their front yard, is the only state with some spine. And all they managed to do was stick to their wolf management plan that they believed to be legal. Court rulings have since agreed with Wyoming’s [...]

Hat tip to reader “Richard” for the link to the old Bangor Daily News article. Maine’s Disappearing Deer: The Prestidigitation of Predator Protection

AR15 The New Modern Sporting Rifle?

Many of us I’m sure recall the uproar Jim Zumbo caused some years back when he made disparaging remarks about the use of black guns when it comes to hunting. The AR15 has long been the standard for the use by our military but now it is gaining popularity among sportsmen as well. I’ve only [...]

Going Hog Wild in Elizabeth City

Residents of Rosedale drive in Elizabeth City NC have seen damage to their properties like a gang of hooligans went through with rotor tillers to their gardens and landscape. Earn a Bonus Point by Taking the Arizona Hunter Education Course

Hunter education courses play an important role in the education of new hunters throughout the US. In Arizona, young hunters can pursue big game at the age of 10; but, only if they have successfully completed a hunter education course. Wisconsin Wolves Killing More Hunting Dogs

A report issued this week by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources indicates gray wolves are becoming increasingly troublesome for farmers and hunting dog owners across the state, killing a record number of animals in 2010.

Wolves attacked or killed livestock on a total of 47 Wisconsin farms last year, up from 28 farms in 2009 and from the previous high of 32 farms in 2008. Douglas County led the list with 12 livestock attacks. Sixteen other northern counties also reported problems with wolves.

Right to Hunt Bill

Let’s face it; hunting has been around since the beginning of mankind and that wild primal urge is still alive and well within all of us today. At least for the time being! It’s important to remember that throughout our history, hunters have helped shape and mold the true American spirit. In fact, one can even argue that hunters have played a monumental role in carving out a new nation from a harsh wilderness environment and the tyrannical rule of an English King. The woodsmanship skills of hunters have been clearly evident throughout every American challenge, struggle, conflict, and war in our history.

Are Feds Further Reneging On Wolf Introduction ‘Deal’?

Yesterday, Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, in a letter to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, told the Secretary that he is being forced by failed promises and stalled litigation to “uphold the rights of our citizens” and will begin ordering his wildlife personnel to kill packs of wolves eating livestock. Why are we seeing what appears to [...]
